Advanced Selection: The Default Tab
Complete the fields as described below to set the criteria for advanced selection.
Operator
The selection you make for Operator is only relevant for combined expressions, in other words if two or more lines containing different values have been created in an advanced selection. If you create a filter that only involves one line, and/or will not be relevant.
- and means that both values are to affect the selection. You would, for example, select and if you wanted a selection of contacts who were both linked to a particular meeting (as an activity type) and had received a document with the title "Summary".
- or means that at least one value must be present for something to be included in the selection. You would, for example, select or if you wanted contacts who either were linked to a meeting or to a document in your selection.
See Filters: Example of an Advanced Selection.
Field
Field shows both the module name and field, as some fields have the same name in different modules. E.g. there are User-defined fields both in Contact and in Contact persons. If you discover that the field is incorrect, you can cancel and start again using the desired field.

The options in the Conditions drop down list correspond to the field that you have chosen, and are primarily determined by whether the field is numerical or alphabetical.
If the field is numerical, you will find the following options in the drop-down list:
- = means that the selection must be exactly equal to the number you entered as the Value.
- Not equal to means that the selection includes everything except the number you entered as the Value.
- > means that the selection includes larger numbers than the value you entered as the Value.
- < means that the selection includes smaller numbers than the value you entered as the Value.
- >= means that the selection is greater than or equal to the value you entered as the Value.
- <= means that the selection is less than or
equal to the value you entered as the Value.
- = means that the information in the selection must be exactly the same as what you have entered as the Value.
- Not equal to means that the selection includes everything except what you have entered as the Value.
- Starts with means that the selection starts with what you have entered as the Value.
- Does not start with means that the selection does not start with what you have entered as the Value.
- Contains means that the selection contains what you have entered as the Value, even though other letters and words may also be included.
- Does not contain means that the selection includes everything except what you have entered as the Value.
- Is empty means that the selected field should not have any contents.
- Is not empty means that the selected field must have contents.
Value
The Value field also varies depending on the field that has been selected. If, for example, you are searching for a Birthday, the field will contain two full stops to allow you to enter the day, month and year. If you are searching for a First name, the Value field will be blank to allow you to enter the name you are looking for.
