Creating a TXT record

The TXT record is an abbreviation of text. The TXT record is a customised text message that is directly registered in the zone file of your domain. TXT records can help you to verify your domain ownership and to prevent spam abuse.

A DNS search has to be performed in order to see this text. The text record is used by some companies to verify that customers have access to the zone file and are the real owners of the domain. The hostname and value of the record will depend on the purpose of the record, and this might vary between different applications or services. Generally TXT entries are used as SPF records, or Sender Policy Framework records, an e-mail validation system designed to prevent spam abuse.

If you are using Microsoft Office 365, a default TXT record will be created. If you edit this record, you are able to reset the original Microsoft Office 365 records by clicking on Update DNS Settings in the Microsoft Office 365 administration screen.

How to create a TXT record

  1. Click Products in the top menu.

  2. Select the domain from the drop-down menu.

  3. Click Domain.

  4. Click DNS Administration in order to open the DNS Administration screen.

  5. In the TXT (Text) panel, enter the hostname you wish to point to in the Host field.

  6. In the Text value field, enter the text that will be saved in the zone file.

  7. In the TTL field (Time to Live), choose when the change should be made available for other servers, 24 hours is the recommended alternative.

  8. Click Add in order to add the TXT record to your zone file.

The new TXT record has now been added and the change will be made available according to your selection in the TTL field.

Tip! You can also Edit and Remove existing records by clicking the respective links in the Actions column.
